Just the facts: Unpacking Evidence-Based Investing (EBI)

Join us this October for our second last In the Room of the year. Host Stephen Backhouse returns with Coreshares’ MD, Gareth Stobie, and Head: Product and Client Solutions, Chris Rule, to look at how adopting EBI principles can help you meet your client’s investment goals.

We will be broadcasting live from CoreShares’ offices and learn a bit about Gareth’s involvement in The Rhino Peak Challenge.

About the webinar

The role of the financial adviser has changed dramatically in recent years due to the proliferation of investment products and downward pressure on fees. Advisers who can minimise overall fees and deliver on the long-term goals of the client set themselves apart. Using evidence-based investing (EBI) principles can provide a key support in these endeavours.

Quite simply, evidence-based investing removes the guesswork from trying to make short-term predictions about markets and individual companies and, instead, focuses on long-term observations of markets. Investment decisions are underpinned by facts and empirical evidence.

This conscious decision to dial down the noise allows advisers to focus on their most critical role, namely, encouraging investors to stay the course and remain invested, so that they remain aligned to their long-term financial goals.

Topics covered include:

  • What is evidence-based investing
  • Strategic asset allocation
  • Controlling the controllables
  • Bringing more predictability to long-term financial planning

A new dawn for South African markets?

As the old proverb goes “The darkest hour is just before the dawn”, and the new year certainly brought with it what felt like a new dawn for South African markets.

In May2021, Stephen Backhouse joined Laurium Capital’s Co-founder, Murray Winckler, and Co-portfolio Manager, Dwayne Dippenaar to unpack what this might mean for you and your clients.

About the webinar

A new dawn for South African markets?

We entered 2021 with the tailwinds of global fiscal and monetary support, the global rollout of the vaccine and a recovery of the global economy off the low base set by the near economic standstill induced by the initial Covid-19 extreme lockdowns. We have seen these bullish dynamics play out year to date with strong data out of China supporting commodity prices, and the general reopening of economies as the vaccine gets rolled out supporting stocks that benefit from an economic recovery.

The big questions that we now must answer are around the sustainability of the economic recovery and perhaps most importantly, what outcomes have been priced into the valuation of various assets globally and where do we see opportunities that can still provide handsome returns to investors over time?

About Laurium Capital

Laurium Capital is an employee-owned boutique asset manager with offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London. Founded in 2008 by Murray Winckler and Gavin Vorwerg, Laurium has grown to R35bn in assets under management and provides a suite of long-only and hedge fund strategies which invest in South Africa as well the as the rest of the African continent.

Their team of 29 driven individuals strive to generate returns and service in excess of client expectations. They combine on-the-ground research with extensive local market knowledge to seek investment opportunities. Their skills in stock selection, combined with disciplined portfolio construction and risk management processes deliver superior risk adjusted returns over time.

They manage a niche range of unit trusts across the risk spectrum, accessible on most LISPs and their client base is well diversified across high net worth individuals, institutions and retail investors.

Asset allocation amidst significant market uncertainties in a recovering world

In March 2021, In the Room host, Stephen Backhouse was joined in studio by STANLIB’s Senior Portfolio Manager in the Absolute Returns investment team, Warren Buhai.

The pair chatted about how the STANLIB team views current market uncertainties brought about as the world recovers from the pandemic and global lockdowns and how these views feed into their current asset allocation views.

About the webinar

The world is steadily recovering from the pandemic: infection and hospitalisation rates continue to fall globally; vaccine rollouts have begun; governments are gradually easing lockdown restrictions and economies slowly recuperating. Given the sheer amount of monetary and fiscal stimulus over the past year, risk assets have performed exceptionally well since the very short bear market of Q1 2020. From here the outlook is more nuanced, largely driven by many uncertainties as the world reopens from its major enforced lockdown, including:

  • Stimulus impact on growth and inflation
  • Central Banks reaction function
  • Potential impact on markets from the above
