About the webinar

Whether you’re a financial advisor planning for your client’s retirement, a DFM managing a range of model portfolios for your advisor partner, or a world-renowned asset manager focused on your flagship multi-asset fund, asset allocation matters and considered to be the backbone of successful investing, playing a pivotal role in shaping investment returns. Asset allocation is like the powerful engine in a finely tuned car, working in tandem with other critical components, such as security selection, market forces, economic factors and costs, to determine the investment journey’s success.

Understanding the overall asset allocation of a client’s investment portfolio is crucial for investment planners and financial advisors. Finding the alignment between a client’s investment objectives and the overall asset allocation of the investment solution is central to providing good advice.

From an asset management perspective, a portfolio’s asset allocation can be determined by a ‘top-down’ process incorporating macroeconomic variables and other market inputs or as a result of a fundamental ‘bottom-up’ investment process or even a combination of both. Most successful asset managers spend a lot of time determining or understanding the asset allocation of their funds – because getting it right or wrong can have a material impact on investment returns. We will speak to some of the best asset allocation specialists in the industry, Neill Young, portfolio manager at Coronation Fund Managers, Bastion Teichgreeber, CIO at Prescient Asset Management and Thumi Loate, senior portfolio manager at 360ne, to discuss their latest asset class and geographic asset allocation positioning coming into the new year. With continued uncertainty around interest rates, inflation, geopolitics and recessions, setting the correct asset allocation is going to be crucial in navigating some of the ‘choppiest’ market environments yet.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the importance of asset allocation as a driver of investment returns
  • Understanding the difference between strategic asset allocation and tactical asset allocation
  • Understanding the difference between top-down and bottom-up asset allocation
  • Understanding the differences in asset allocation positioning between asset managers with difference philosophies and processes
  • Understanding the predictive power of past returns on future returns
